Coal Methane Flaring
Methane gas is produced during the earliest stage of the process that turns plants into coal.
When coal is extracted from coal beds during coal mining activities, the trapped methane is released from the coal and surrounding geological strata into the mine and atmosphere. This is known as coal mine waste gas.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change. The impact of coal mine waste gas can be reduced by destroying the methane in flares or electricity production devices installed as part of the project.
There are five different types of project available here to generate certificates and funding:
New flaring projects.
involves the installation and operation of flaring devices using coal mine waste gas from a mine with no previous material methane destruction activity. This type of project credits the combustion of methane undertaken by installed flares.
Expansion flaring projects:
involves the installation and operation of flaring devices using coal mine waste gas from a mine that has previously undertaken methane destruction activity. This type of project credits the combustion of methane undertaken by installed flares, taking into account a baseline for existing devices.
New electricity production projects: involves the installation and operation of electricity production devices using coal mine waste gas from a mine with no previous material methane destruction activity. This type of project credits the combustion of methane and displacement of electricity undertaken by installed electricity production devices.
Expansion electricity projects:
Involves the installation and operation of electricity production devices using coal mine waste gas from a mine that has previously undertaken methane destruction activity. This type of project credits the combustion of methane and displacement of electricity undertaken by installed electricity production devices, taking into account a baseline for existing devices.
